J M Brown Ltd were appointed to carry out a complete bridge refurbishment project in Trimley St Mary, following the deterioration of the existing protective paint system which had reached the end of its service life. The works were required to fully remove the failing coatings and apply a new high performance paint system to protect the steel structure and extend the lifespan of the bridge.
Access to the structure was provided through full scaffolding and encapsulation supplied by the client, allowing the works to be carried out safely and in a controlled environment. J M Brown Ltd then undertook full surface preparation to SA2.5 standards by means of abrasive blast cleaning, removing the existing coatings and contaminants to expose clean steel ready for the application of the new protective system.
Once the surface preparation had been completed, the team applied a three part paint system in accordance with the Network Rail M24 specification. The system consisted of an Epigrip C402V2 Epoxy Zinc Phosphate primer, followed by an Epoxy Zinc Phosphate intermediate build coat, and finally a Resistex C137V2 special finish coat to provide a durable and protective final layer.
All works were carried out by certified applicators, with environmental conditions such as dew point monitoring and paint thickness measurements carefully recorded throughout the project. This quality control process was overseen by J M Brown’s in house ICORR approved paint inspector, ensuring the application met the required standards and that full paint specification documentation was provided to the client upon completion.
