Façade repairs and repointing at Epsom Clock Tower

Scope of works

J M Brown Ltd were instructed to carry out specialist cleaning and restoration works to the historic Epsom Clock Tower, a Grade II listed monument. The project began with a full DOFF steam clean to all elevations, carefully removing years of surface dirt, soil, traffic pollution and carbon deposits that had built up over time. This process allowed the team to carry out a detailed substrate survey to assess the overall condition of the brickwork and identify the level of restoration required to protect and preserve the structure.

Following the assessment, the team undertook a full rake out of the existing mortar joints, removing inappropriate materials that had been used in previous repairs. The clock tower was then carefully repointed using traditional lime mortars, helping to weatherproof the structure while allowing the masonry to breathe as intended. Additional works included brick replacements, mortar repairs and refacing to moulded bricks where deterioration had occurred.

These carefully considered conservation works ensured the clock tower’s masonry was stabilised, protected and visually restored, helping to safeguard this important landmark for many years to come while maintaining the integrity expected of a historic listed structure.
