Façade maintenance and restoration in Central London

Scope of works

J M Brown Ltd were appointed to carry out façade maintenance and restoration works to a commercial office building in Central London. The aim of the project was to carefully clean, repair and restore the external brickwork, improving both the appearance and long term durability of the building while maintaining the character of the original masonry.

The works commenced with a full DOFF steam clean to the brick elevations. This specialist cleaning method uses superheated water to gently remove accumulated surface dirt, atmospheric pollution and carbon deposits that build up over time, particularly in busy city environments. Cleaning the façade also allowed the team to properly assess the condition of the brickwork and mortar joints before proceeding with the repair works.

Once the cleaning stage had been completed, the team carried out a full rake out of the existing mortar joints, removing deteriorated and failing mortar that could allow water ingress and further damage to the structure. The façade was then carefully repointed using traditional lime mortar, a breathable material that is well suited to historic and traditional brickwork, helping to weatherproof the building while allowing natural movement and moisture evaporation.

Additional restoration works included brick repairs to areas where damage and weathering had occurred, ensuring the masonry remained structurally sound and visually consistent. The team also carried out tuck pointing to the window arches, carefully reinstating the fine mortar detailing that enhances the architectural features of the façade.

The completed works significantly improved the overall condition and presentation of the building, restoring the brickwork while ensuring the façade remains protected and well maintained for many years to come.
