Paint removal, repointing, and repairs in Wimbledon

Scope of works

A recent job carried out for a residential owner. Their desire was to have the damaging paint removed to the front elevation and leave the brick and stonework uncovered, leaving the natural beauty of the brick and stonework exposed.

J M Brown Ltd had a team of specialist cleaners attend the works first to remove the paint. This consisted of applying paint softeners to the painted surface and allowing them to dwell before removing them using Super-Heated Hot Water DOFF system. Multiple applications of paint softeners were needed to achieve the desired results.

Once the paint was removed, the façade restoration team attended the works, the façade was assessed, and as initially feared, the below surfaces and brickwork were damaged. This is due to the multiple layers of paint and the many years that it had been there causing damage as the substrate was painted with products that did not allow the underlying surface to breath.

The solution was to repair the damaged and spalling brick work, and replace where required, repair and consolidate the stonework and rake out all the old damaging cementitious mortar to the entire facade and re-point using lime mortars.

Once the works had been completed using suitable lime mortars and stone repair products, the stonework was re-painted using breathable paints to allow longevity of this beautiful home for years to come.
