BEFORE AND AFTER

Rendering

Rendering is a process that involves adding textures, colours and features to the exterior of a building. This can be done by means of a variety of methods, such as painting, plastering and applying stucco. The purpose of rendering is to enhance the look of a building, as well as provide a layer of insulation and protection from the elements.

Depending on the desired finish, a variety of materials can be used, such as lime mortars or waterproof acrylic. It is important to choose the right materials and texture to ensure the best outcome, as well as to make sure that the rendering is compliant and in keeping with any local building requirements or regulations.

Repointing

Repointing is a process that involves replacing the mortar between bricks and stone and therefore ensuring the longevity of a building’s structure. It is a process that requires specialised skill and care, as the process is delicate and can easily be carried out incorrectly and cause further damage. The process involves removing the existing defective mortar, cleaning the exposed areas and replacing the mortar with new material. When repointing, it is important to use the same type and colour of mortar to ensure a successful and seamless repair. Mortar samples are carried out to ensure a match is achieved. Once the repointing process is complete the structure will be preserved for years to come.

Commonly used methods by J M Brown are weather struck, flush, penny and tuck joints.

Stone fixing

Exterior stonework is a great way to add character and texture to any building. It’s also a great way to protect the structure from weather damage and wear and tear. When it comes to fixing exterior stonework, it is important to start by inspecting the area for any signs of deterioration or damage.

Before beginning any repairs, it is essential to clean the stone correctly to remove any dirt, dust, and debris, this is carried out by our in-house team using the DOFF and TORC cleaning methods. Once the stone is clean and prepared, you can then begin patching any cracks or gaps in the stone, as well as replacing any pieces that are beyond repair.

Brick replacements

Replacing brickwork on a building can be a complex process. If the brickwork needs to be replaced due to damage, the first step is to assess the current condition and determine the best course of action, which may include completely replacing the brickwork or simply patching the area. Removal of the old brickwork involves carefully removing the affected area, while taking care not to damage the surrounding bricks. The area is prepared for new brickwork by cleaning it and checking for any further damage. Cleaning is carried out using the DOFF and TORC cleaning methods by our in-house team. Once the area is ready, the new mortar is colour matched to the existing and the brick work reinstated .

Glazed brick & tile repairs

Restoring glazed brick and tile requires skill and precision, involving cleaning, repairing, patching, grouting and replacement of missing pieces, depending on the material. Our in-house team uses the DOFF and TORC cleaning methods for the initial cleaning process. Cracks or chips on the surface of the glazed brick or tile are patched and repaired with matching materials like epoxy or grout. Grouting is crucial and involves using waterproof sealant to fill spaces between tiles and matching the colour and texture of existing tiles. Finally, a protective coating is applied to the restored glazed brick and tile to preserve its appearance and protect against future damage.
